I have noticed that with any low-grade, personal turmoil I experience, my artwork becomes more quietly moody and complicated. This slow, concentrated activity allows for simultaneous introspection which results in a serene sensitivity inherent to the paintings. Despite the pervading mood, colors dance off the canvas as light glows from within to create a naturalistic contradiction and insights for the artist. Personal trauma or transition precludes changes in my artwork. One can map an artist's life by looking at the evolutions in her work. Painting brings peace. All of my oil paintings are done entirely with a single palette knife to make the experience much more tactile and direct than it is with conventional painting. I don’t use any brushes, mediums or solvents. When describing the ways in which I apply paint to canvas, one may use the verbs scrape, drag, slap, push, stroke and even kiss. Those actions usually come in that order during the progress of a painting and can be identified in each finished piece. Our society has a very loose connection to nature at present. Painting brings me back to the fact that we are all dependent on nature’s treasures and we are all at the mercy of her whims. My work sometimes balances between real and surreal, much like the condition of wilderness in our highly computerized, motorized world. I like to keep myself in balance between those two worlds. To uncover the cognitive processes of my painting requires a bit of effort. In studying a piece one may go through the same sort of meditative journey that I do. Spend enough time with that artwork and its purpose will change as you change. It will move with you. It is my hope to connect with others by providing a starting point for their own mental and emotional excursions. Painting brings peace. Art sustains life. |
